Another Big Step Forward on the Karaka Trail!

We’re stoked to share that another major stage of the Karaka Trail upgrade is now complete!
Over the past few weeks, we’ve finished 1.1km of trail working back from the Karaka/Waiotahi intersection toward the Red Cliffs. The original goal was 1.4km, but with $40,000 raised (short of the $59,000 needed), we pushed ahead and upgraded as much as we could — leaving just 300m still to tackle in the future.
This section had some pretty gnarly old slips and overgrown, narrow benching to deal with. Thanks to the team at Walkway Solutions, there’s now a solid new benched trail in place that’s safer, more durable and far more enjoyable for everyone — riders, walkers, hikers and our amazing trapping volunteers.
And yes… despite planning the work for peak summer, the heavens absolutely opened again! Monsoon-like rain, highway closures — the works. Huge credit to the crew for pushing through and getting it done.
A massive thank you to our funders who made this stage possible:
$5,000 from the Trillian Trust
$10,000 from Grassroots Trust
$25,000 from We Care Trust
We’re incredibly grateful for the support.
This project has been more than 10 years in the making, and every section completed is a win for our wider community. We’re not done yet — that final 300m is still on the list — but today we’re celebrating progress.
If you’re out that way, go check it out
